Boxelder Bugs Boisea trivittata

Black bugs with red pinstripes, sunning in crowds on the warm south wall — boxelder bugs are harmless but relentless in fall, when they try to move into wall voids for winter. They don’t breed indoors; the fight is at the wall, not inside.

Signs you have them

  • Clusters on sunny exterior walls in fall
  • Stragglers around window frames indoors on warm winter days
  • Red stains when crushed on fabric (don’t crush them)

What you can do today, free

  • Vacuum indoor stragglers instead of squashing (stains)
  • Seal gaps around window frames and siding trim
  • Hose clusters off walls with soapy water on sight

Questions, answered straight

Do they damage the house?

No — they’re a nuisance in volume, not a destroyer. A fall perimeter treatment under the Pest Plan intercepts them before they overwinter in your walls.
