Earwigs Forficula auricularia
The pincers are for show — earwigs are moisture bugs that live in mulch, leaf litter, and the damp strip where lawn meets foundation. When Florida summers alternate soak and scorch, they migrate under door sweeps into bathrooms and laundry rooms.
Signs you have them
- Pincer-tailed bugs under potted plants and door mats
- Indoor sightings in bathrooms and utility rooms after rain
- Ragged chewing on seedlings and flower petals
What you can do today, free
- Pull mulch back 6–12 inches from the foundation
- Fix door sweeps — daylight under a door is an invitation
- Trap them with a rolled damp newspaper overnight, discard in the morning
Questions, answered straight
Do earwigs go in ears?
No more than any other bug — the name is medieval myth. They’re a moisture and entry-point problem, covered under the Pest Plan.
